The Importance of Having a Growth Mindset
Like Dr. Carol Dweck has said, when students (and in this case athletes) believe they can improve, they understand that their efforts make them better. Therefore, these students and athletes put in the extra time and effort that leads to higher achievement.
Mindsetworks.com explains how recent findings have established just how important having a growth mindset can be:
“Recent advances in neuroscience have shown us that the brain is far more malleable than we ever knew,” the website explains. “With practice, neural networks grow new connections, strengthen existing ones, and building insulation that speeds transmission of impulses.”
So what does all of this mean?
“These neuroscientific discoveries have shown us that we can increase our neural growth by the actions we take, such as using good strategies, asking questions, practicing, and following good nutrition and sleep habits,” the website says.
Basically, it boils down to this: if you believe you can improve and that your brain can grow, you behave differently.
